We decided to go on a day-trip to 2 islands in the All Saints Bay. The boat left from the touristy harbor Mercato Modelo and as it was Sunday, it was very busy and the boat was pretty full. There was a samba band on the boat that kept us company during the entire cruise. The crew was also serving Caipirinhas, Batida de Coco and Batida de Maracujá. The first stop was at 'Ilhas dos Frades' where we had a couple of hours to hang out on the beach. There was a little church up on a hill from where we had a lovely view of the beach and the surroundings.
Then, the boat left the island and we were sailing off to the next island, however, about half way we all of a sudden turned around and headed back to the first island. Apparently, some people missed the boat and needed to be picked up. Everyone was clapping and booing when they got on the board and one of the women was cursing something in Portuguese. Finally, we were off again to our second stop, Ponta de Areia on Itaparica Island. Since the beach was quite shallow, we were taken to the beach by two smaller wooden boats. The jetty was an interesting construction and was part of a restaurant that served a buffet lunch. After lunch, we walked on the beach for a bit but we didn't have much time left before we had to start heading back to the boat. Far away, we could already see a thunderstorm approaching. We got back to the boat just in time before it started to pour down, while others weren’t so lucky and got soaked on the little boats coming back. The captain announced that we had to wait for the thunderstorm to pass before we could head back to Salvador. We were all huddled together as it started to get chilly and we got completely soaked. The crew started to hand out life vests, they said it was just for safety reasons, but when the samba band started to play again, we felt as if we were on the Titanic. We tried to buy a bottle of rum from the crew but they wouldn’t let us but offered us some Caipirinhas. As it started to clear up, we finally sailed back to the harbor. Back at the house, dinner was already awaiting us. Vinni, the house manager, held an orientation after dinner and prepared us for our first day at the sites.
